Academics

Undergraduate Admissions

If you have never attended Mississippi State University, please complete the online Undergraduate Admissions Application. If you have attended any other institution(s) prior to MSU, you are required to submit one official transcript from that institution(s).

Graduate Admissions

If you have never attended Mississippi State University, you are required to complete a Classified Graduate Admissions Application and submit the appropriate documentation. Please visit the Office of the Graduate School for detailed admissions requirements. Please contact the academic department for your specific major to obtain entrance exam requirements.

If you have attended MSU but have not been enrolled during the last three semesters (excluding summers), you are required to complete a Graduate Readmissions Application, which may also be found on the Graduate School's website.

Unclassified Graduate Admission is available to distance students desiring graduate level study for purposes other than an advanced degree, such as teacher certification. Distance students admitted as unclassified status must remain unclassified for one semester before being admitted to a degree program.

Only nine hours of work received as an unclassified student may be transferred to a degree program; however, hours completed as an Unclassified Graduate may not be used to satisfy provisional admission to a program of study. Departmental approval is required for an unclassified student to enroll in any graduate level course.

You are required to complete an Unclassified Admissions Application form and submit one official transcript from the institution which granted your undergraduate degree. Please note that as an Unclassified Student you should select the "Graduate School - Unclassified" as the college choice.

Certificate in Aeronautical Meteorology Forecaster (AMF)

Students who complete the AMF certificate program should also meet the meteorology requirements for United States federal government employment as a meteorologist. Additional coursework in mathematics, physics and chemistry is required to meet both NWS and WMO standards, but is not offered through the Department of Geosciences. If you are interested in obtaining the AMF, please check with an advisor regarding when specific mathematics courses (e.g. Calculus) must be completed. [+]

The AMF was originally designed to prepare military weather forecasters to meet World Meteorological Organization (WMO) qualification requirements for Aeronautical Meteorology Forecasters as specified in WMO 258. In 2012, WMO released new education and training standards defined by WMO No. 1083. We have conducted a careful review of these standards, and believe that our AMF coursework addresses over 95% of the new atmospheric sciences preparation learning outcomes, and are seeking verification of compliance. Students who complete the AMF certificate program should also meet the meteorology requirements for United States federal government employment as a meteorologist. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University offers graduate programs of study leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). In essence, the distance degrees are operated identically to their on-campus counterparts; distance students simply participate in the distance-campus sections of the classes they are taking. In particular, the admission requirements and the degree requirements are the same as for the on-campus program (see Information for Prospective Students). Courses by Distance Courses use a variety of technologies to deliver course content to distance students, including websites, streaming video, and interactive video conferencing. Department-approved proctors may be required to administer examinations to distance students; such examinations include course exams as well as others such as the doctoral qualifying examination. Oral examinations (e.g., oral preliminary examination, thesis/dissertation defense) may be conducted via on-campus visit by the student, interactive video conferencing, or some method subject to the approval of the student’s graduate committee and the graduate program director. The Department of Aerospace Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Major areas of study include fluid dynamics; structural mechanics; flight mechanics and controls; flight test engineering; and design optimization. The Raspet Flight Research Laboratory, a unique university facility for graduate aeronautical teaching and research, is operated as an integral part of the department. Other department facilities consist of: a low speed wind tunnel; a water tunnel; a blow-down supersonic wind tunnel; and a universal testing machine laboratory. Members of the faculty provide primary leadership in computational simulation and numerical grid generation. The Graduate Program The strength of the graduate program, as it has been for more than five decades, resides in its excellent Faculty, with a keen interest in the advancement of the students and a hands-on approach to education, further enhanced by the outstanding facilities of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the College of Engineering. Ph.D. Course Requirements “Earning a Ph.D. in engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department’s doctoral program will normally require several academic semesters of study beyond the student’s BS degree in engineering. The diverse and multidisciplinary nature of most engineering doctoral topics requires that considerable flexibility be allowed in tailoring the doctoral program course of study, consistent with the goals of the topic under study and the unique interests and capabilities of each student. “Students admitted on or after Fall 2012 are encouraged to take 42 hours of course work beyond the B.S. degree to obtain a Ph.D degree. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Major areas of study include: industrial systems; operations research, manufacturing systems; management systems engineering; and ergonomics/human factors. Research laboratories include facilities in Human Systems Engineering, Logistics and Transportation Engineering, Management Systems Engineering, and Optimization and Data Informatics. Although helpful, you do not have to have an engineering BS degree to enter the program. The PhD degree requires three other pre-requisite courses: ergonomics, engineering economy, and production control. Except for the first six hours of calculus these prerequisite courses can be taken while in the graduate program, though prerequisite courses cannot be counted toward the degree. Admission Requirements Admission decisions for the PhD program in ISE are based on several factors, including previous academic performance, standardized test scores, references, and relevant work experience. Typically, entering students with MS degrees should have a 3.50 out of 4.00 GPA on their MS work, while students entering with BS degrees only are generally expected to have a 3.50 GPA out of 4.00 for their last two years of their undergraduate program. These grade point averages are viewed as guidelines, rather than strict requirements. Students with lower averages may still be eligible for admission based on outstanding qualifications in other areas. All applicants must submit GRE general test scores to be considered for admission.
