About DiploFoundation

DiploFoundation is a non-profit institution established by the governments of Malta and Switzerland in 2002. Diplo works to increase the role of small and developing states, and to improve global governance and international policy development.

Diplo offers postgraduate-level academic courses and training workshops on a variety of diplomacy-related topics for diplomats, civil servants, the staff of international organizations and NGOs, and students of international relations. Combining a highly-developed learning methodology with a unique online learning platform, Diplo courses are flexible, personal, interactive, and community-building. Courses are delivered online, face-to-face, and in a blended format.

Accredited study opportunities

Diplo works in cooperation with the University of Malta to offer accredited online courses in diplomacy and global policy topics. The blended learning Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy, offered through the University’s Department of International Relations, includes a 10-day residential workshop in Malta, followed by 16 to 20 months of online study. In 2013, the partner institutions introduced Internet Governance as an area of specialization within the Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy.

In addition to accredited degree programs, Diplo offers a wide range of online courses, most of which can be taken individually as Diplo certificate courses, or as the University of Malta accredited courses towards the Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy. Course topics include:

Workshops

Diplo offers a wide range of capacity development workshops which are exercise-based and aim to help participants identify areas that are challenging for them and offer practical tips and tools to overcome them. Topics include:

Workshops are always customized to meet the needs of a particular region or partner institution and are delivered by our experienced and knowledgeable faculty members.

In recent years, our team has delivered workshops for the EU and the African Union; the ministries of foreign affairs of Serbia, South Africa, Bahrain, Indonesia, and Moldova; the Emirates Diplomatic Academy and the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy; and at universities in the USA, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, among others.

Research

In addition to teaching, Diplo’s expert staff and faculty are researching contemporary topics of relevance to diplomacy, digital policy, and development. Current topics include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data diplomacy, online learning, sustainable development goals, and more. The results of our research feed into our teaching activities; in addition, publications and other relevant resources are shared via our website.

Faculty

Diplo’s faculty includes over 60 diplomats, academics, and Internet governance policy experts, who bring a wide range of experience and a variety of perspectives from all over the world.

Alumni

In 2018, 454 participants from 107 countries around the world attended 24 Diplo online and blended learning courses: 66% diplomats and other civil servants, 14% representatives from civil society, 13% staff of international organizations, 3% representatives of business, 2% from academia, and 2% from other sectors. Some 50% of the participants were female.

To date, more than 6,000 participants from across the world have attended Diplo’s online courses. Diplo also has an active online community of alumni, faculty, and partners, who interact on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as meeting face-to-face when opportunities arise.

Internet governance (IG) has become one of the most important policy areas of our time. Diplomats are members of a profession developed over many centuries. But why do we still need them in a world transformed by electronic communications? This course examines the nature of diplomacy; when it is appropriate; the advantages and disadvantages of different diplomatic methods; and the lexicon of diplomacy.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

Describe and explain with clarity the shape and functions of the contemporary world diplomatic system. Identify and describe the different stages of negotiations, the objectives for each stage, and techniques for securing agreement, providing examples from diplomatic practice. Overview

Public diplomacy is a hot topic today, yet only a decade ago, it was a very specialized term.

There is new transparency in the interactions between governments and countries in the international system, influenced by such factors as the democratization of diplomacy, globalization, the resurgence of methods of bilateral, regional and multilateral diplomacy, and the spotlight on external and internal issues.
