Open University Of Cyprus

Introduction

As the second public University, established in 2002, the Open University Cyprus (OUC) aims to fill an important gap in the Cypriot higher education system, offering accredited distance learning degrees at all levels (undergraduate, master and doctoral). Building on its origins as the country’s only University dedicated to distance education, OUC is growing quickly in academic stature and overall reputation. Today’s challenging realities have widened OUC’s horizons, helping to bring Cyprus near towards its strategic goal: to be established as a regional educational and research center and hub for international scholars and students alike in the Eastern Mediterranean basin.

In OUC, constraints such as time, local limitations, age, occupational status, or family responsibilities, are lessen and cease to function as inhibitory towards the creation of an appropriate learning environment. All the study programmes offered by the Open University of Cyprus are based on modern educational systems, new technological advancements, and refined ground for the interested participants, at all levels (undergraduate, postgraduate, and training in the context of lifelong learning). OUC is equivalent to any other recognized university in the world, regardless of its educational methodology (conventional or distance learning).

The Open University of Cyprus is dually oriented toward both the domestic and international educational communities and their activities and goals. The academic programmes offered by OUC are international, well planned and career-oriented to correspond to the country's needs and meet the demands of its students by upgrading knowledge and expertise, according to their aspirations and ambitions. OUC is proud to be a University that is entirely synchronized with the European Credit Transfer System ECTS, and that enhances the mobility of its students and the inter-relationship with other conventional universities.

Furthermore, along with its educational role, the OUC also focuses on the development of research and the enhancement of research programs; through its publications on innovative results which have an impact on relevant scientific areas. Since its establishment, OUC has emphasized the vital importance of research for promoting the University in the international scientific community, while also actively pursuing interaction with scientific organizations and professional associations.

Finally, through its social activities and commitment to connect with society, OUC envisions its role as an inspiring educational institution. An innovative, open university that offers a stimulating environment for students, staff and alumni noted for promoting culture and collaboration with its neighboring countries - and beyond.

Vision

The Open University of Cyprus (OUC) is committed to opening up education to all, strives for an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with the business world. The OUC aims to establish itself as a leading distance education University, with international presence and recognition, mainly in the broader area of southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean. A Higher Education Institution, which offers diverse high quality programmes of study in ‘classical’ and contemporary scientific fields in both Greek and English, attracting students from across the world.

Mission Statement

The establishment of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), the second state Higher Education Institution in 2002, opened new horizons for higher education through open and distance learning. The flexibility of distance learning and the high quality of academic programmes offered by OUC encourage individuals to pursue higher education studies or complete their education, if unable to do so in the past. In addition, university graduates have the opportunity to acquire postgraduate degrees in various subject areas, as a means of enhancing their professional careers. In fact, at OUC, higher education is an ongoing process, which poses no age limit, financial or societal preconditions.

The mission of the Open University of Cyprus is to continue providing to its students the opportunity for lifelong learning and for obtaining new knowledge and skills needed to start or progress with their professional careers, without having to engage into typical student work routines. The University aims to combine its international agenda and flexible structure, using both as a tool for establishing Cyprus a regional centre for education, scientific research and innovation. Towards that direction, OUC works to expand its network of collaborators and establish strong partnerships with other universities and research institutions in the broader region and beyond, promoting cooperation and exchange of good practices and upgrading its technological e-Learning infrastructure.

Joint degree by: Open University of Cyprus, School of Pure and Applied Sciences and University of Cyprus, Department of Psychology and Department of Computer Science. Since the inception of the computing paradigm, the prevalent metaphor for a computer has been that of a multi-purpose tool, as exemplified by the use of “command lines” and “desktops” at the interface between humans and computers. The unparalleled prevalence of computing-enabled devices in our everyday lives, and the widespread access to information over the Web, suggests a more apt metaphor for a modern computer, that of an assistant. Humans no longer use, but rather collaborate with their devices to solve a cognitive task, with each party learning and adapting to the capabilities of the other. Communication and decision-making happens at a level that is transparent to, and cognitively-compatible with, human abilities and limitations. One no longer speaks of human-computer interaction, but of human-computer symbiosis. To teach the new paradigm of cognitive computing, the M.Sc. Program in Cognitive Systems brings together two main scientific areas: Cognitive Psychology, and Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science. Aiming, on the one hand, for the prospective students to understand the basis for human cognition, the Program is strongly influenced by Cognitive Psychology and includes learning modules that explore the fundamentals of perception, learning, mental representation, and reasoning in humans.
