Ah, the joy. Waking up. Hoping, hoping to hear that your school is among the canceled due to snow. The snow day.
But hold your breath. Snow days may be a thing of the past.
According to The Washington Post, a South Carolina school district just abolished snow days, requiring its students to attend virtual learning sessions. While students can still attend in their pajamas, gone for them are the snow days of cartoon marathons, forts, and cocoa in the afternoons.
Anderson County School District 5 announced that they are the first in the state to pilot "the first eLearning program", designed for "inclement weather."
According to The Washington Post, Anderson School District 5 Superintendent Tom Wilson said, "It just makes good sense. Quite honestly, it's a waste of money, so we think this is the way to go in the future."
He explained that the district invested over $11 million in Chromebooks over the past several years for K-12 students, "so we think we're in a position to make it work."
Wilson said that the district is working to determine the number of students who do not have internet access at home, and what to do for younger children who may struggle to access what they need to do for assignments, reading, and homework.
He acknowledges that there will be "outliers" in the program, but said that the district is "confident that the vast majority of the students will be able to do their work from home."
He added said that the response from parents and pupils has been overwhelmingly positive so far.
