Introduction

The Literacy Education program is designed for educators who are passionate about fostering literacy skills and promoting lifelong learning in students of all ages. Our program offers a comprehensive and research-based curriculum that prepares graduates to excel as literacy specialists, reading coaches, curriculum developers, and literacy advocates.

Through a blend of coursework, field experiences, and practical teaching opportunities, students in our program gain the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to effectively teach literacy across diverse populations and contexts. They engage with cutting-edge research and best practices in literacy instruction, explore theories of reading development and literacy acquisition, and learn how to assess, diagnose, and address the literacy needs of individual learners.

The Literacy Education curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, writing instruction, and literacy assessment. Students also learn about cultural and linguistic diversity, digital literacy, and family and community partnerships.

Throughout the program, students have opportunities to apply their learning in real-world settings through practicum experiences, internships, and clinical placements in schools, literacy centers, or community organizations. Under the guidance of experienced literacy professionals and faculty mentors, they develop their teaching skills, implement evidence-based interventions, and support struggling readers and writers.

Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to become certified literacy specialists or reading teachers and make a positive impact in the lives of students who struggle with literacy. They may pursue careers in K-12 schools, adult education programs, community colleges, or literacy nonprofits. Whether they aspire to work with young children, adolescents, or adult learners, our graduates are equipped to promote literacy and empower individuals to achieve their educational goals. Join us and embark on a rewarding journey toward becoming a literacy educator.
