The University of Illinois online Bachelor of Arts in Communication program explores the human process of understanding and interacting with all perspectives; from daily interpersonal or organizational levels of communication, up to that produced by major media conglomerates. This degree prepares you to interpret and produce communication in all its forms, from written to spoken to nonverbal.

The Bachelor’s Degree
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication is offered in an online format, which has the same degree requirements and faculty as the on-ground format. Our online program provides students the opportunity to actively participate in a diverse and dynamic learning community, while they complete their degrees in their free time via modern technologies.
Admission to the online Communication B.A. program is competitive. We invite applications from any students who live more than 60 miles from UIS, as well as students within a closer range who have a documented rationale. The number of students admitted each term is limited by enrollment capacity. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis.
In addition to applying to the University, applicants are also required to submit a statement in which they describe their professional and educational goals, as well as discuss their access to the Internet and their possession of relevant technological/computer skills.
Advising
Faculty members work with new students to plan courses of study. Based on instructors’ assessments of writing ability in required courses, advisors may require advisees to take remedial courses. Generally, advisors assist students in developing personal programs of study and in identifying all necessary requirements.
Degree Requirements
Communication majors must complete 32 credit hours in the major. In addition, they may take up to eight credit hours in Communication courses to satisfy the upper-division general electives.

Curriculum
The College is the largest academic unit at UIS, enrolling 55 percent of all students in its majors. The College is committed to curricular interdisciplinary, experiential learning, experimentation, and concern for student-centered learning that includes the use of technologies that aid collaboration and extend the concept of “community” beyond local and regional boundaries. The foundation for this environment is a well-rounded curriculum in the humanities, social sciences, arts, and physical and natural sciences, including mathematics and computer science. Students learn professional skills, but also the blend of critical thinking, scientific logic, and appreciation of the humanities that is so important in the development of personal enrichment.
