Introduction
This MSc is aimed at professionals already working in Biomedical Science or a related healthcare discipline. The two-year online course is led by a research-active team with years of hands-on experience and is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the leading body for those working in the field.
Students will acquire practical skills and advanced subject knowledge. They will learn to reflect critically on current practice and the latest developments in their chosen specialism. They will explore ethical issues and policy frameworks as they develop a flexible approach to problem-solving in their chosen specialism.
Ranked in the Top Five UK Universities for Biomedical Science Research Power, the faculty recorded an unprecedented 100% 4* (world-leading) score for its Research Environment (REF 2014).
Ulster’s Biomedical Science MSc was the first online distance learning course of its kind and continues to offer a programme that is globally relevant. The School has over 20 years of experience delivering a range of postgraduate online courses, with links to a number of international universities and industrial partners.
Career Opportunities
The course provides the necessary practical and theoretical insights that will help graduates advance their careers, preparing them to take on a more senior position, for example in a higher NHS band.
It is suitable for those looking for career advancement in the clinical sector, in hospital laboratories, in commercial organisations in the biopharmaceutical sector and other bio-industries in both the private and public sector.
With greater skills and knowledge of their specialism, they will be ready for promotion to a managerial role, or to take up entrepreneurial opportunities in areas such as research and development. The course is also suitable for those wishing to carry out further courses of academic study.
Curriculum
All of the taught modules are 100% online. There is no need to travel to campus and students are free to study whenever and wherever they want.
There are multiple intakes during the year (September, November, January, May and July) with course modules offered on a cyclical carousel model that allows students to take a planned break and pick up the course at a later date in order to fit their studies around existing work and life commitments.
Delivered via Ulster’s platinum-rated Blackboard portal, course tutors and external expert lecturers will guide and mentor students through each of the modules which are made up of:
- Student-led online seminars
- Group tutorials
- Case study-oriented problem-based learning exercises
- Private study
- Module assignments
Throughout the course, you will have access to a dedicated Student Success Advisor with help and advice about timetables, the distance learning experience and any other non-academic questions.
Project work
Rounding off this Master's course is a 60-credit laboratory-based Research Project which students will carry out in their own workplace.
Supported and supervised by a suitably qualified workplace mentor, students can design the project around a topic of their choosing that will be relevant and beneficial for both them and their employer.
