Legal English is not a law course and therefore students can expect their instructor to focus on legal language and know U.S. law in general terms, rather than in detail. Further because your instructor of this class is not a lawyer, you can expect to know more about legal matters than he does. However, you will greatly benefit from the discussions of the U.S. legal system and cases as points of comparison and as a springboard for the further development of your own legal career. Although Legal English is not an introductory law course, it is appropriate for those who plan to study law in the future.
Curriculum
In this course, students are introduced to the American judicial and legislative systems. They become familiar with legal terminology, learn how to analyze cases, and explore how legal documents are composed. Students will read and discuss legal cases that highlight the particular characteristics of the US legal system and will view and discuss videos of court proceedings. Additional topics include a discussion of the US “trias politica”, the US Supreme Court, federal vs. state jurisdiction, and comparative legal systems. Additionally, by becoming familiar with US legal systems, students will gain a greater understanding of many aspects of US culture.
