Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Online Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offers you a scientific foundation in the fascinating fields of spatial data modeling, spatial data analysis, geo-visualization, and enterprise GIS architecture. The online Master of Science in GIS is geared to part-time professionals and focuses on the principal avenues of employment within the next generation of geospatial design, development, and analysis. Our faculty members are thought leaders and innovators in the new data science that is GIS. Our courses, available entirely online, provide a convenient, interactive platform to explore geographic information systems as part of the dynamic field of cloud computing, big data analytics, and spatial data mining and modeling.
The field of geographic information systems is fast-evolving, offering an expanding selection of career opportunities in sectors such as environmental organizations, private companies, local and national government agencies, and the intelligence and national security communities. Professionals with advanced degrees in the field are better positioned for the most highly regarded jobs in the industry.
Students must complete all academic work in a master’s degree or certificate program within five years.
The five-year span is calculated from the start of the first course that counts toward the degree (including time spent on continuous enrollment). Continuous enrollment does not stop or extend the time limitation requirement. This time limit includes any courses taken at another Johns Hopkins school/division that have been approved to count toward the degree or certificate. If necessary, students may request from their program committee an extension of time to complete their program beyond the five-year limitation.
If an extension is granted, it will be communicated in a letter, and the five-year limit increased by the time included in the extension. An extension may be granted for a semester up to a full year, and in rare circumstances for two years.
