Introduction

The Master of Arts in Communication offers practical and applied knowledge, taught by the social scientists who study effective communication and the practitioners who use it. Electives engage students by having them tackle real-life communication issues, develop usable communication skills, and build a strong portfolio. And industry experts bring real-world lessons, experience, and best practices in the classroom.

The Johns Hopkins MA in Communication provides a cutting-edge curriculum that integrates digital technology with innovative strategic communication and strong writing skills. The program offers concentrations in public and media relations, political communication, health communication, digital communication, and corporate/non-profit communication.

Job prospects for communication professionals are encouraging. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs for advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales managers will increase by 13% by 2018. Students and alumni have access to exclusive job opportunities lists and Career Services Center where counselors help students develop a job search strategy, a resume, and interviewing skills.

Students must complete all academic work in a master’s degree or certificate program within five years.

The five-year span is calculated from the start of the first course that counts toward the degree (including time spent on continuous enrollment). Continuous enrollment does not stop or extend the time limitation requirement. This time limit includes any courses taken at another Johns Hopkins school/division that have been approved to count toward the degree or certificate. If necessary, students may request from their program committee an extension of time to complete their program beyond the five-year limitation.

If an extension is granted, it will be communicated in a letter, and the five-year limit increased by the time included in the extension. An extension may be granted for a semester up to a full year, and in rare circumstances for two years.
