California by Design (August 14th - 24th, 2017) is an integrative design studio where students are exposed to the West Coast region as a very specific context for design innovation. California is more than a place— it’s a lifestyle and worldwide it is known as the epicenter of innovation for action sports and hi-tech products and services. This studio will uncover what it means to be Californian by exploring its cultures, lifestyles, and industries (such a surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, entertainment, and start-ups) and then examining their unique influences on fashion, behaviors, and imaginations. NewSchool offers two architecture summer programs. The 4-day programs dive into two exciting areas of focus: Neuroscience in Architecture and Healthy Urbanism. Ideal for architecture students and working professions interested in deepening their understanding of architecture. Healthy Urbanism (August 7th - 10th, 2017) summer intersession program guides students in the study of the growing acknowledgment that the way cities and neighborhoods are designed directly impacts the health of the residents, workers, and visitors. At the same time, many designers and planners fail to create healthy urban environments through a lack of understanding, experience, and training. This program provides a grounding in the process and design strategies that promote healthful cities. The program covers the broad context of urban issues including regionalism, community and public infrastructure. Addressing current issues involving the homeless, senior citizens, and demographic trends provide an informational base relative to social, political and economic issues associated with urban settings. Neuroscience for Architecture (August 14th - 17th, 2017) summer intersession program guides architecture/design/neuroscience professionals in an exploration of the juncture of the brain and the built environment. Program participants develop a working knowledge of the brain and learn aspects of how it processes spatial cues. Studio work in the program utilizes evidence-based design approach, grounding architectural concepts in neuroscience. The 4-day programs consist of lectures by world-renowned faculty, workshops, field trips, guest speakers, and networking, as well as access to NewSchool facilities including the Welch Library, Design Studios and Materials Lab. Executive Leadership This course provides executive-level leaders with a comprehensive approach to leadership in the field of construction management. Executives will examine leadership and will discover ways to strengthen core competencies to help to develop their individual leadership capacity. Leadership skill building will include developing executive level communication skills, leading teams and growing individuals, energizing your stakeholders, and managing the demands of a high-stress environment.
