Program Description

Presentation and objectives

The current linear economic model, which consists of “extract, make, throw away” is based on having large amounts of energy and cheap and easily accessible resources. But this model is not sustainable because it wastes resources, pollutes and is reaching the limit of its physical capacity.

Today, society faces important challenges: scarcity of resources; biodiversity loss; climate change; increasing pollution and waste generation; etc. And the situation only seems to get worse because: on the one hand, we want to maintain and improve advanced economies; and, on the other, it is necessary to offer opportunities for improvement for a growing world population.

The current model of our economy does not seem capable of providing a solution.

To move towards a more regenerative economy, towards the Circular Economy, we need to: adopt life cycle thinking and produce and consume in a different way. The Circular Economy is presented as an attractive and viable alternative, which very important companies have already begun to explore.

In this course we will see how, through the Circular Economy, companies can create value through the reuse and recycling of products; and entrepreneurs and designers can come up with smart solutions to help the principles of the Circular Economy be applied.
