The Online Master of Science Solar Energy Engineering offered by the University of Freiburg in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is an international distance learning program which focuses on photovoltaics research, development, production and marketing. It provides participants with the skills they need to develop, design and optimize photovoltaic systems.
Divided into 3 preparation modules, 5 mandatory modules and 3 elective modules, the program explains the technological and physical foundations of photovoltaics and provides a comprehensive overview of the interrelated economic and ecological aspects of renewable energy. Course modules include semiconductor devices and semiconductor technology, material and solar cell selection, thin-film solar cells, photovoltaic electronics, fatigue analysis of photovoltaic systems, and the production and economics of renewable energy.
The Online Master of Science Solar Energy Engineering is aimed at people who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of photovoltaics and at companies who are looking to upskill their employees.
Candidates are required to have a university degree in a scientific or technical discipline (physics, chemistry, electronics, mechanical engineering, material sciences, computer engineering) plus one year of professional experience. Candidates with an economic background (e.g. industrial engineering) or a broad technical background (e.g. environmental sciences) are asked to contact the Program Coordinator early and talk about their possibilities.
Flexible course structure
Depending on each candidate’s qualifications, the duration of the Online Master of Science Solar Energy Engineering course varies between four and six semesters.
Previously acquired qualifications such as university degrees and professional experience are converted into points based on the currently applicable European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and may be credited. With the completion of the Online Master of Science Solar Energy Engineering the candidates reach a total of 300 ECTS points, which entitles them to embark on doctoral studies.
