Program Description

Master of Science

Computer science is still the most revolutionary science or engineering field of the last forty years and the next fifty. Computer scientists are distinguished by the higher level of theoretical expertise and innovation they apply to complex problems and the creation or application of new technology.

The online computer science degree program at the University of Illinois Springfield provides a strong foundation in computer science. Students have access to an outstanding variety of computing systems. The master’s degree programs are oriented toward software and are most appropriate for students interested in the design, analysis, and implementation of software programs.

Security and Information Assurance

In addition to the software emphasis, we offer some courses in security and information assurance. These courses are appropriate for candidates interested in design, implementation and policy issues related to security and information assurance.

Data Analytics

There is an enormous demand for data scientists who can interpret the extraordinary amounts of information being produced and collected. Organizations in business and government are eager to leverage data to improve their productivity, allocate resources, minimize risk, increase transparency, gain new insights, and maintain their competitive advantage.

The online M.S. degree in Data Analytics is part of the Computer Science Department at UIS. The degree aims at providing an interdisciplinary approach to data analytics that covers both the foundational mathematical knowledge of data science and the computational methods and tools for preprocessing, interpreting, analyzing, representing and visualizing data sets. Applicants to the online degree are accepted each fall semester. The Data Analytics program may, at its own discretion, accept new students in other semesters.

Online Graduate Admission for Computer Science M.S.

Program Requirements (32 credit hours = 8 courses)

  • 4 courses at the 500 level (student choice)
  • 3 courses at either the 400 (above 410) or 500 level (student choice)
  • Graduate Research Seminar

Admissions Requirements for Full Admission – Computer Science M.S.

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.70 on a 4.0 scale is required
  • A completed program of study similar to a bachelor’s degree in computer science
  • All prerequisite courses completed
  • Applicants who do not meet all entrance requirements may be granted conditional admission
  • We do not require a GRE score

Admissions Requirements for Full Admission – Data Analytics M.S.

To be fully admitted to the Master of Science in Data Analytics program, students must have completed a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and have completed all prerequisite courses (below) with a grade of B- or better.

  • Business Calculus or Calculus I
  • Applied Statistics
  • Discrete Structures (4 hrs)
  • Computer Programming Concepts I
  • Computer Programming Concepts II
  • Data Structures and Algorithms
  • Matrix Analysis and Numerical Optimization

All applicants must provide written evidence of their ability to perform at a high academic level by submitting a personal and academic statement.

A GRE score is not required for admission
