Course details

Develop the theoretical knowledge and professional skills required to become an expert in quantity surveying and commercial project management.

You might already work in the construction industry, or you might be looking to expand on the experience you have built up in a related field. Delivered online, the course will enable you to develop the core competencies required by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)*, in a flexible format no matter where you are located. Building on your experiences in the workplace, your studies will be placed in a context which will enhance your strategic thinking and your confidence in decision making.

You will study construction technology, design economics, financial management and procurement. You will also have the opportunity to undertake research which will develop your skills in inquiry and critical analysis. Our links with local, regional and national employers will ensure that your learning will be inspired by contemporary industry practice that is highly relevant to your future career.

On graduating, you will be eligible to apply to sit the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Assessment of Professional Competence, the final stage to becoming a chartered quantity surveyor. Alternatively, you could choose to enter a related field such as engineering or project management.

Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in a cognate subject, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applicants should be in relevant employment at the point of commencing the course.

Please note, this course is not suitable for applicants with a first degree in Quantity Surveying that is accredited by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional.

All applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.

IELTS:

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example, completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Job Prospects

On successful completion of the course, you will be well placed to progress to chartered quantity surveyor status with RICS. You will have developed the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to work as a chartered quantity surveyor, or to further develop your career in other related areas such as engineering or project management.

UK & EU 2018/19

Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most taught postgraduate modules have a credit point value of 20. The tuition fee for students entering in in 2018/19 on this course is £661 for each 20 credit point module. For modules with a different credit point value, their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £33.05. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation.

Library

Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, e-journals and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you, and the Library is open 24/7 if you would like to visit. Our offsite team also provide specialist support for distance learning students.

Dedicated Support Team

Just because you aren't learning on campus doesn't mean you'll have to cope on your own - you'll have the support of a personal tutor along with the University's Student Hub and Wellbeing Centre. They are on hand to offer you advice about everything from academic issues to stress and anxiety.
