Introduction

The M.A. in Humane Education is recommended for non-classroom educators and social justice, animal protection, and environmental advocates who wish to work outside of school settings. M.A. coursework enables students to raise awareness and educate effectively about the interconnected issues that affect people, animals, and the environment, focusing on bringing about long-term, systemic change. This 33-credit graduate program is delivered online, with an optional one-week, 3-credit Humane Education Residency held at the Institute for Humane Education in Surry, Maine. Students are required to take six foundational courses in humane education, plus practicum, two electives, and a capstone course. M.A. students are strongly encouraged to attend the Humane Education Residency. Those who are unable to attend may take an additional elective instead. Graduates of the M.A. program teach in non-classroom settings. Many work for non-profit organizations as outreach educators, launch their organizations or social businesses, educate through the arts, or bring the solutionary lens to their current work in various fields.
