Online LLM in Master of Law

Best Online Master of Laws Programs in Master of Law 2017

Master of Law

Law degrees indicate that a student has obtained expertise in a highly prestigious and specialized field, and an LLM is one option that many students decide to pursue. These programs may be offered online, allowing students to take classes and learn concepts without having to visit a traditional classroom or campus.

So exactly what is an online LLM in Master of Law? This diploma is internationally recognized and typically takes about a year to complete. Generally speaking, an LLM is a second or advanced degree in law and is pursued by students who wish to operate in a global context or who want more advanced education than they can receive in a JD program. LLM programs may be generalized or highly specific; topics studied can include financial law, taxation, legal research, intellectual property, copyright, dispute resolution, health law, or the legal systems of a specific country.

Those who earn an advanced law degree might find a number of benefits. For one, they may acquire a deeper understanding of a specific type of law, which can prove useful throughout a future career. For another, having an advanced law degree can open up new career pathways that were not previously available.

Because the cost of an LLM can differ depending on the situation, it is important for students to do their financial research before enrolling. Costs may vary due to factors such as tuition fluctuations and the institution’s country of origin.

Graduates who hold a Master of Law often pursue careers within the legal field. Many choose to join existing law firms, although there are also graduates who decide to open their own law practices or join the legal departments of large organizations. While many decide to practice law directly as attorneys or judges, graduates can also become consultants, legal analysts, advisors, or even educators.

All students need is a computer, an Internet connection, and the desire to advance in their careers with a U.S. law degree. Program Courses: Coastal Law’s J.D. program is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the online U.S. Law LL.M. program has the acquiescence of the ABA. The 26 credit hour program typically takes one year to complete and provides a comprehensive overview of U.S. law, enhancing the ability of students to meet the academic qualifications required to take a U.S. bar exam. The courses and the program are designed, specifically, for foreign-educated attorneys and take into consideration that most of the U.S. Law LL.M. students are not native English speakers. The program covers core academic subjects commonly tested on U.S. bar exams, including Constitutional Law; Civil Procedure; Evidence; Contracts and Sales; Criminal Law and Procedure; Real Property; Professional Responsibility; Business Organizations; Torts; Wills, Trusts and Successions; and Legal Analysis, Reasoning and Communication. Coastal Law’s U.S. Law LL.M. curriculum meets the requirements for both the California and Washington State Bar exams. Additionally, students may take two credit hours of electives from our online LL.M. Program in Logistics and Transportation. These electives include courses in International Business Transactions, Immigration Law, Customs Law, etc. There are three semesters each year in the U.S. Law LL.M. program, Fall, Spring and Summer. Students may begin the program in any of these three semesters. Coastal Law accepts applications to the U.S. Law LL.M. program on a rolling basis. The next start date for the Summer 2017 term is May 10, 2017. Program Faculty Members: The faculty of the U.S. Law LL.M. program consists of a distinguished group of law professors from Coastal Law and other ABA accredited law schools. These professors are leading scholars in their fields, and many are also former practitioners who bring the combination of practical experience and legal scholarship into the online classroom setting. Our professors enjoy interacting with their students and sharing their experience and knowledge of U.S. Law. All of our U.S. Law LL.M. professors have completed training in online teaching and have substantial experience teaching in an online setting. Tuition: Tuition for the program is $765 per credit hour for a total cost of $19,890. Tuition for non-degree seeking students is $1,300 per credit hour. This is a fraction of the cost of other LL.M. programs in the U.S. Students can pay for the program as they go along each semester. Reading materials are included in the cost of tuition and there are no additional student fees or costs. Admissions Qualifications: To qualify for admission to the U.S. Law LL.M. program, applicants must have obtained their first degree in law from a country outside of the U.S. Admission to the program is based upon a number of factors, including academic performance, work experience, and the applicant’s personal statement. Applicants should apply through the Apply Online page of Coastal Law’s LLM website. Three items are needed for Coastal Law to review an application: the electronic application (with a personal statement and resume attached to it), an official transcript submitted for evaluation to a California Bar-approved evaluation service (such as A2Z Evaluations) and, with some exceptions, a TOEFL or IELTS score. The U.S. Law LL.M. program does not require letters of recommendation or any additional documents. LLM Legal Practice This new LLM (Master's in Law) award is for those with professional legal qualifications, for example the BPTC or LPC (or their precursors). Credit points are awarded for these professional qualifications and students can then 'top-up' these points with a dissertation or publishable article to gain this LLM. This course is studied by distance learning. Nottingham Law School is introducing a new LLM (Master's in Law) award for those with professional legal qualifications. Professional legal qualifications (for example, BPTC or LPC or their precursors) will provide evidence of appropriate prior learning and achievement, equivalent to two-thirds of the LLM award. Students will then 'top up' these credit points with a dissertation or publishable article, studied and completed by distance learning, to gain the LLM degree. In the increasingly competitive legal employment market practitioners may find that having an additional qualification, a masters degree, will make them stand out from the competition. The LLM Legal Practice (DL) qualification will not only provide additional evidence of your academic ability but also showcase your knowledge of more specialised aspects of legal practice. The LLM Legal Practice (DL) provides 60 Masters level credits which, when combined with the evidence of academic achievement from the successful completion of the BPTC or LPC (or equivalent), will lead to the award of an LLM. Course The course is equivalent to 600 hours of study and includes a manageable assessment task of either a traditional dissertation or the production of an article of publishable quality. Our course is designed to allow completion of the top-up element over a 4-24 month time period. This would allow students to undertake study immediately following the completion of the LPC or BPTC and complete the course quickly, but also offers more flexible time frames for completing the self-study module. The course is not just for current LPC and BPTC students. Those who have successfully completed the LPC and BPTC (or their equivalent) at any time are eligible for admission. The course will be extremely attractive to practitioners as it also satisfies CPD requirements. Introductory programme The introductory programme includes guidance on research methods, and legal writing. All students will undertake the introductory programme by distance learning. Dissertation In line with our existing LLM courses, students have a wide discretion in the selection of their dissertation topic, subject to the capacity of the Law School to provide expert academic supervision. The Law School has academic staff with wide-ranging expertise across diverse areas of law. However, students are encouraged to consider areas of law that are particularly pertinent to their anticipated or actual area of practice when selecting their chosen topic. The dissertation is 18,000 – 20,000 words in length. Publishable article As an alternative to the dissertation, students can, with guidance from an experienced academic, produce an article of publishable quality. This is likely to be of shorter length than the dissertation, focussing on a particular point of practice or law. Entry requirements Applicants should have successfully completed either the Legal Practice Course (LPC), or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). Applications from members of other legal professions will also be considered, for example, Patent Attorneys or Trade Mark Attorneys. Legal professionals from other jurisdictions are also eligible to apply English language requirements International and EU students also need to meet our English language requirements. [-]
