This fascinating online course provides anyone with a little musical creativity and a music software program the tools to adapt their skills to creating music for the screen.
The rapid increase in worldwide content creation including film, short film, documentary, corporate video, web series, television series and television commercials is providing an unprecedented opportunity for composers/creators of music to earn an income from their musical works.
You'll study examples by the greatest film composers of all time John Williams (Star Wars), Ennio Morricone (Django Unchained), Hans Zimmer (Inception), Thomas Newman (American Beauty) and many more, to find out how it's done by the masters and how you can apply their techniques to your own original score.
You'll also have opportunity to a live lecture and Q&A chat session with guest lecturer and popular film composer Christopher Gordon (Mao's Last Dancer, Master & Commander).
N.B. - This course is taught in English, and is open to international students as well as those within Australia.

You will learn essential concepts for composers of film and screen music including:
- Introduction to screen music
- Why have music in film?
- Organising the score
- Hit points
- Time code
- Interpreting film for composers
- Digital Audio Workstation basics
- Midi basics
- Mixing & bouncing
- Presentation of works to class/critique
By the end of this course participants will have created, mixed and produced their own original music for several pieces of film.
N.B.: This course has a large workload. Participants will need to dedicate at least 10 hours per week to 2 × 90 min online chat sessions (Mondays & Thursdays at 1900 AEST), film viewing, and written assignments.
The ability to read and write musical notation is not a prerequisite for this course.
The course will focus on Logic Pro 9 & Pro Tools as the audio workstations of choice -- although students are welcome to use any audio workstation of their choosing during the course.
