Diploma of Higher Education in Natural Sciences

Science underpins everything we do – from mixing paint to predicting weather or performing microsurgery. If you’re curious about the world we live in, or thinking about a science degree, this Diploma is ideal. You’ll explore aspects of biology, chemistry, Earth sciences, environmental sciences, physics, astronomy and planetary science – while developing critical thinking, data analysis and problem solving skills. The Diploma is a valuable qualification in its own right, or you can use it as a stepping stone to a degree.

Educational aims

This is an intermediate science qualification which aims to provide you with:

  • a lifelong interest in science through modules that are accessible to people of all educational backgrounds
  • an understanding of the roles of different scientific subjects
  • the development of a range of basic scientific and practical skills
  • an opportunity to enhance your personal development, in particular your confidence to move to Level 3 study.


We believe cost shouldn’t be a barrier to achieving your potential. That’s why we work hard to keep the cost of study as low as possible and have a wide range of flexible ways to pay to help spread, or even reduce, the cost. Fees for study commencing in academic year 2014/2015 are:

  • Fees are paid on a module-by-module basis – you won't have to pay for the whole of your qualification upfront.
  • If like most OU students studying part time, you study an average of 60 credits a year – you’ll study for six years to complete a degree. Our typical fee for 60 credits is £2,632.
  • Our current fee is £5,264 – based on 120 credits of study – which is equivalent to a year's full-time study.
  • The total cost of your chosen qualification currently starts from £10,528 based on our current fees.

Career relevance

Scientists are in demand in the jobs market, particularly if they also have good interpersonal skills and some workplace experience. The logical, reasoned approach needed for science study is relevant to many roles in the financial, business and public sectors – and employers in all fields put a high value on anyone who can deal competently with a large amount of complex information and turn it to good use. The ability to select and analyse relevant data and to present conclusions concisely and logically is essential in most lines of work, as is the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to study this qualification. You will however need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
