This interdisciplinary diploma will give you knowledge and understanding of the social, political, economic, scientific and technological issues at the heart of contemporary environmental problems. It focuses on issues such as climate change, dwindling resources and the loss of biodiversity, examining how and why our environment is under threat.

Educational aims

The Diploma of Higher Education in Environmental Studies is an intermediate qualification towards the BA (Honours) Environmental Studies degree that builds upon the Certificate in Higher Education in Environment. The qualification aims to provide a broad knowledge and understanding of environmental problems and how individuals, organisations and society can respond in order to address and ameliorate these problems. It integrates the social sciences, technology and science to enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of environmental change.

More specifically the qualification aims to develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of environmental change across time and space, and of how contemporary environmental change needs to be understood as the result of complex interactions natural and social factors
  • knowledge and understanding of the political, economic, social and scientific conflicts that are at the heart of contemporary environmental problems and debates
  • knowledge and understanding of subjects such as climate change, nature management, water management, food production, renewable energy and sustainable development
  • knowledge and understanding of the student’s agency in environmental change and how they can make a difference as an individual, citizen, consumer and employee
  • skills in working with the methods and technologies that can be used to seek appropriate information on the environment and to improve environmental management
  • skills of synthesis, analysis and communication, utilising digital technologies to improve learning and performance.


We believe cost shouldn’t be a barrier to achieving your potential. That’s why we work hard to keep the cost of study as low as possible and have a wide range of flexible ways to pay to help spread, or even reduce, the cost. Fees for study commencing in academic year 2014/2015 are:

  • Fees are paid on a module-by-module basis – you won't have to pay for the whole of your qualification upfront.
  • If like most OU students studying part time, you study an average of 60 credits a year – you’ll study for six years to complete a degree. Our typical fee for 60 credits is £2,632.
  • Our current fee is £5,264 – based on 120 credits of study – which is equivalent to a year's full-time study.
  • The total cost of your chosen qualification currently starts from £10,528 based on our current fees.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to study this qualification. You will however need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
