Certificate in Computer Software

Program Overview

The Certificate in Computer Software Program allows you to enroll in courses that suit your interests and experience and offers a highly flexible curriculum.

Students can select from tracks in:

  • Web Development
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software Development
  • Computer Science Master’s Preparation
  • Self-Designed Track

All courses receive University credit and may be applied towards a UVM degree.

Students use the certificate to improve their chances for employment or career advancement in IT-related fields, as well as other fields where Computer Science skills provide an advantage. Students may receive certification prior to entering or while working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Science and Information Systems, or to prepare for graduate studies in Computer Science.

Enrolling in the Certificate

Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent is eligible to enroll. Students may enroll in the certificate at any time before, during, or after taking courses that will be applied to the certificate.

It is, however, recommended that students enroll prior to beginning coursework to ensure that they are properly advised and that their selected courses are approved by a faculty advisor from the Department of Computer Science.

Courses in the Certificate in Computer Software are offered live (face-to-face) on the Burlington campus unless specifically designated as online. Several of the tracks, including Web Development and Cybersecurity can be completed 100% online. Online instruction allows students to access these courses from anywhere, at any time during the day or night using a computer.

Time Required to Complete the Certificate

The time it takes to complete the certificate varies with each student’s background and course selection. Typically, three to five semesters are required, with students taking one to two courses per semester. Because of course prerequisites, it is not possible to take all five courses in one semester. There is no time limit to complete the certificate.

The Certificate in Computer Software requires completion of at least 15 credits (5 courses) in advisor-approved computer software courses, including CS 21/Computer Programming I, with a grade of C (2.0) or better in each course.

Students may transfer a total of 3 credits (1 course) from another institution. Please note that students must be matriculated at the time credits are transferred.

Internship & Career Advising

Internship and career counseling resources are now available. Students who have officially enrolled in the program and registered for their first course are eligible for career coaching, as well as internship and job shadowing placement assistance through UVM’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.*

One-on-One Career Coaching

The Career Coaching program is designed to meet the needs of individual students regardless of where they are on their career path. Self-assessment and exploratory tools are available, such as Myers-Briggs Personality or Strong Profile Assessment. In addition, a career coach is available to assist with resume development or enhancement, building interviewing skills, networking and other professional development guidance.*

Internships and Job Shadowing Opportunities

One of the many benefits at UVM is internship and job shadowing outplacement. All interested students, in the final phase of their program, will receive personal assistance to obtain an internship or job shadowing placement. While internships and job shadowing opportunities are not guaranteed, our programs have aligned with a multitude of companies to create many paths to choose from.*

*These services are only available for students and internship opportunities local to UVM.

If English is not the applicant’s first language, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score is required. UVM requires a minimum band IELTS score of 6.5. and 7.0 for funding. For TOEFL scores see attached chart. For information about test dates and sites for TOEFL, contact TOEFL; and for IELTS, contact IELTS. If an international student has attended a U.S. institution for three or more years, the Office of Admissions may waive the requirement for TOEFL or IELTS scores on a case-by-case basis.
