Our certificate in criminal justice programme is taught part-time and is a nationally recognised qualification. It is the equivalent of half of a first-year of undergraduate study and is open to anyone with an interest in criminal justice. The programme is broad-based and aims to equip students with an understanding of the rapidly changing criminal justice environment. The course focuses on national, legal and policy issues facing the criminal justice system and it introduces students to the problems facing policy-makers and practitioners. Students explore broad criminological issues such as theory, research, crime prevention, punishment and rehabilitation.

Why study this subject?

A Certificate of Continuing Education (CertCE) is the basic qualification that can be gained in higher education and it shows that you are capable of studying successfully at university level. It will also equip you with a range of skills and knowledge useful for a career within a criminal justice setting or may enhance your existing knowledge if you already work in the sector. You will gain understanding of crime and social and personal factors; develop critical thinking; and become confident in considering and reflecting upon sociological, legal and criminological theories. You will also gain skills in research, time management and written communication, which are readily transferrable to the world of work.

Course Structure


The CertCE Criminology and Criminal Justice is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 60 credits.

Level 4 modules:

  • Fundamentals of Effective Learning (15 credits)*
  • Introduction to Offender Profiling (15 credits)*
  • Introduction to Criminology (15 credits) *
  • Introduction to Psychology (15 credits) *

Upon completion of your CertCE Criminology and Criminal Justice we offer the opportunity for you to progress on to study for a Bachelors degree (360 credits).

  • These modules are core and must be passed in order to achieve the award.

Career destinations

This course provides students with underpinning knowledge for a career in the criminal justice sector and may also confirm your competence if you are already working within the sector as part of your continuing professional development. By demonstrating that you have the skills to study at university level you could also go on to complete a full degree programme and the credits gained on this programme can be used towards the first year of a degree programme of a similar nature.

Entry requirements

We believe that education should be accessible for everyone, so you do not need any previous academic qualifications to start our CertCE Criminology and Criminal Justice course.

You will be allowed to start the Criminology and Criminal Justice course and make an assessment of whether it is right for you during the first three weeks. You must pass your first assignment set during this time in order to continue with your studies.

If English is not your first language, your English ability should be equivalent to IELTS (Academic) 6.0.
