Are you fascinated by the universe? Interested in science and the physics at work in the world around us? USQ’s Bachelor of Science (Astronomical and Space Sciences) combines the fascination of astronomy with the opportunity to develop in-demand expertise in physics, mathematics, statistics, computing and data science.

You will learn from internationally recognized stellar astronomy and planetary systems experts and access USQ’s advanced research facilities, including Mount Kent Observatory, scientific computing software and support, and overseas telescopes available through USQ’s international collaborations in astrophysics.

USQ is ranked above world standard in Astronomical and Space Sciences research (Excellence in Research for Australia report, 2015)

Experience world standard learning with the flexibility of studying externally either full or part-time. You will be supported by online classes, remote access to USQ facilities, and residential schools where appropriate.

Some of the exciting courses available are astronomy, physics, modern physics, astronomical techniques, optics, planetary & exoplanetary science, quantum mechanics, solar & stellar astronomy, photonics, and galactic & extragalactic astronomy. Complementary studies are also offered in areas such as mathematics, science, and computing.

Professional accreditation

USQ has designed this major to align with national and international standards and is seeking accreditation with the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP).

As a graduate, you can apply your core scientific skills and related studies in maths and computing to a range of careers, within education, government or the private sector. You can also choose to take further studies at USQ to pursue a career in tertiary education or research.

Loan to help you pay your fees

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP allow you to defer your fees until your income reaches a certain level.

Entry Requirements

  • Subject pre-requisites: English (4, SA), Mathematics B (4, SA) or equivalent
  • Recommended prior study: at least one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Science21, or equivalent.

English Language Requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements. This program requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Applying directly to USQ:

  • Semester 3, 2018 - applications close Monday 5 November, with semester 3 commencing on Monday 19 November 2018.
  • Semester 1, 2019 - applications close Monday 18 February, with semester 1 commencing on Monday 25 February 2019.
  • Semester 2, 2019 - applications close Monday 1 July, with semester 2 commencing on Monday 15 July 2019.

Credit for previous study or work experience

You may be eligible for credit if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.
